Chantal Hildebrand's linocut carving method begins with a solid block smooth surface, only to evolve into detailed vignettes that portray leisurely scenes of black women who represent resistance and peace, at rest.
Press Release
Chantal Hildebrand's linocuts begin with a sharp blade, a focused intent, and contemplation of the meaning of mind and resistance, the physicality of endurance and potency, and the results of our own efforts manifesting into both reliance and critical thinking.
Hildebrand's carved linocuts and woodcut vignettes of black women at rest present a narrative through full figures in intimate settings at home or in quiet repose. Chantal conveys beauty and strength in contrast to daily life, presenting anatomically realistic and natural figuration carvings. The artist's method is a delicate balance of surrendering to the carved medium; that responsiveness allows unexpected turns in the material surface, and allows the composition to organically shift and unfold. There is a balance that is cultivated in working in such subtractive methods and materials. The results are vibrant depictions of classic, poignant, and necessary contemporary moments.
